I feel that the public has a right to know everything its government is doing, because how are people suppose to know if their leaders can be trusted with their resources and decisions that will affect not only them, but everyone in their society. I do not think it is possible to have an effective government without complete transparency, because if we only see things that people in the government do within the public eye, than how are we to know or have an opinion on what goes on behind walls, and what schemes or plans they have for our community.
If I were a journalist and received leaked information about the government that the public would want to know but was pressured by the government not to release it, I guess it would depend on the severity of the information and the effect it would have on everyone. For example, if it were information that showed how selfish our government is, and future plans they have that will not benefit us as people, than I wouldn't think twice about releasing it, but it was only minor information, than I would not feel the need to release it.
If I had information that the public should know, I would send it to a newspaper or a news show, because if it were published on Wikileaks, people wouldn't believe it to be as true as they would as if it were published in a local paper or on a new broadcast. Also, people would investigate the situation more if it were in a newspaper and not on the web.
This article discusses the charges of rape and sexual assault on Julian Assange. We are told that he could face execution or detention in Guantanamo Bay if he is moved to Sweden, but as long as he remains in the USA, those charges do not apply. We are also told that he is on conditional bail while his case is discussed.

Analyzing News Video
1.What is the story? (What is the point of the news report?)
The story is about how Aspirin can lower your risk of death from numerous types of Cancer.
2.What is the establishing shot in the video?
The establishing shot is the news reporter reporting the story in front of a picture of Aspirin.
What is the introduction?
The news reporter introduces the topic of how Aspirin can cut the rick of dying from types of Cancers, and tell the viewers that there is new research supporting it.
Most likely "sources" are used in the report and they are making comments or being quoted. Name two of them.
Two sources are:
1. The Lancet
2. Dr. Peter Rothwell (Oxford University)
Based on what these two sources say, what questions do you think they were asked? Create two questions for each source that you feel they were probably asked.
Questions I think that were asked to the Doctor, are, "How does Aspirin affect people with Cancer?" and "What are the risks for taking Aspirin daily?"
Identify two different types of "B-roll" in the video.
Two types of "B-roll" are, an elderly man taking an Aspirin, and a shot of Aspirin bottles.
What are two other types of B-roll footage that you think they could have used (consider what is being said in the voice overs)?
Two other types of B-roll footage that I think they could have used are, showing a picture of a graph while the reporter is saying the death percentage rates after taking Aspirin. Also, they could have used a shot of a doctor speaking to a patient about taking Aspirin, when the reporter tells us what the doctors opinion of taking Aspirin is.
Identify two different voice overs and briefly list what facts are in each voice over.
Two different voice overs are, while a shot of The Lancet is shown. The reporter says that there is a 20 % drop in death rates for common Cancers. Also, while there is a shot of a woman taking an Aspirin. The reporter says that there is a 30% drop in death rates for Lung Cancer.
What is the closing to the video?
The closing to the video is the reporter saying:"speak to your doctor first."
Who is the reporter and what is her/his tag at the end?
The reporter is Heather Hiscox. Her tag at the end is, she repetes "talk to your doctor first," because it is a feature on the website.

Remember to Always Keep your Cool
Frum maintains "her cool" and continues with the interview while asking the questions she felt were important by saying Sandra's name repetedly until the woman who was being interviewed answered her. Also, she kept asking the same question until she received an answer.
I think the outcome would have been terrible if she had been more agressive or confrontational, because Frum was already being very nice and calm while asking the questions and kept her tone when she didnt receive her answer, and Sandra was getting very defensive, so if she had of became agressive, than Sandra would have gotten even more upset, and would have hung up a lot sooner than she did.
One question that Frum asks that i feel is an effective question is, "what was her condition when you last saw her, when did you last see her," because immediately after Frum asked the question, Good changed the subject to how people are hurting the environment. Also, Frum asked the question over and over and each time, Good became even more and more defensive and continued to change the subject.
As a student journalist, what I can learn from Frum's technique in case I ever have a interview that "went wrong," is to remain cool and do not become angry or frustrated if I am put down or called "a very bad reporter." Also, keep asking the questions that I feel are of importance until I get the answer.
If I had a chance to interview one person, it would be Taylor Swift, because she imspires me with her music and how she is not much older than me and has chased her dream of becoming a singer, and has succeeded greatly. I do not think it would be a tough interview, because she is so use to being interviewed and being asked questions on the spot. Also, that is all part of her career; being interviewed, and entertaining people.

Cheaters Never Win and Winners Never Cheat
I have never considered that the news i hear, watch or read may be fictitious, because if it is in the newspaper, than you automatically think that because it has already gone through editing, it must be true. Also, you would not think that someone would make up certain lies that could eventually harm their job or hurt anyone else for that matter.
I was shocked and baffled when i read these two articles, because they are not only hurting a certain person, they are hurting themselves. I was surprised to find out that professional journalists have fabricated news, because you would assume that in order for them to have been hired to be a journalist, they must have had some sort of training in not lying and publishing news that is worthy and reliable.
I do not agree with Jack Shafer's assertion that, “most liars make things up for the simple reason that they don't have the talent or the ability to get the story any other way,” because if their employer felt that they did not have the talent or ability to be a journalist, than they would not have hired them. Also, sometimes people are pressed for time and have to make up a story in the nick of time to get it done, and not get in trouble with their boss. I do not think that it is always right to lie, but sometimes there may be a reason as to why they had to.
I do not think that colleges and universities should be doing a better job of graduating journalism students who can handle the responsibility, because the students could be doing an excellent job in handling responsibility in university, but when they get into the real world, they become worried and nervous that they will not succeed.
I think that when issues of ethics arise that a newspaper ombudsman helps, because maybe they could prevent fictitious news from being published into the community, which would also keep people from being publicly humiliated.

Hard News vs. Soft News
Indonesia volcano starts to erupt
This article on the CBC site, "Indonesia volcano starts to erupt," is hard news. The purpose of the article is to send a warning and inform people of what is taking place. It also includes a picture of the volcano beginning to erupt. The headline suggests that the volcano is harmful, because it uses the word "erupt" which means to explode. The tone of this article suggests harm or danger.
Save the economy, keep the spending tabs open
This article on the CBC site, "Save the economy, keep the spending tabs open," is hard news. This article is trying to inform people on how much our economy has changed and is continuing to change. It is also trying to warn people to keep from spending a lot in order to save our economy. The tone of this article is very serious.
Dern-Ladd family joins Hollywood Walk of Fame
This article on the CBC site "Dern-Ladd family joins Hollywood Walk of Fame," is soft news, because it is about a family of actresses and actors who were honored to accept a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This story is very entertaining, and the tone of the article suggests happiness and joy.
Kathleen Winter's debut novel vies for 3 awards
This article on the CBC site, "Kathleen Winter's debut novel vies for 3 awards," is soft news, because it was found under the entertainment section of the site. It is also soft news, because writing a novel is considered an art. The tone of the article is also very happy because she is being nominated for the awards.
Snake loose in Toronto high rise
This article on the CBC site, "Snake loose in Toronto high rise," is considered to be a blurry. I think it is blurry because it is serious that the snake is lost and could eventually die if not fed, but the fact that it cannot hurt anymore due to the fact that it is not poisonous changes the way people look at the story, for example seeing it as being entertaining or humorous. A quote that shows how this article can be humorous is, "I can't go to the bathroom without thinking it might be in the toilet or something," said Karynah Zeh, laughing. "Which is probably totally untrue, but you don't know, right? All those stories that scared you when you were a little kid." This is funny, because this could not actually happen. I would consider this article to be hard news, because the tone of the article is very serious, considering that someones pet is lost and could more than likely die.
Crosby drops gloves in Penguins loss
This article on the CBC site, "Crosby drops gloves in Penguins loss," is blurry, because fighting is a serious matter, but while at a hockey game, it is very entertaining. Although the tone of this article seems to be very serious, and the quotes of the players are also serious, I believe this article to be soft news, because the fight sounds like it would have been very entertaining, and sports are considered to be soft news, because they entertain people.

Writing The News Article

Car Accident Captures The Lives of Two.
Early on a rainy Monday morning, Mr. and Mrs. Krumpit were driving to work on the Trans Canada Highway, when Mr. Krumpit lost control of the vehicle, and landed upside down in the ditch just a few feet from the road, ending the lives of the couple.
Police were immediately called to the scene, along with the local fire department to try and rescue the couple before it was too late. They were able to free the couple, and both were sent to the hospital for further treatment and surgury.
Unfortunately, the doctors could not save their lives, and were pronounced dead an hour after the accident occurred.
The head of the Police force; Constable Donuts, said that,"Rain was defenitly a factor, there was a lot of water on the roads, and it was very difficult to see." Reporters also asked Doctor Lungly to commented on the couples condition, he stated, "Mr. and Mrs. Krunpit were severely hurt. Mr. Krumpit had a lot of brain damage and internal bleeding, while we believe that Mrs. Krumpit died instantly. My team and I did everything we were able to do, but sometimes it just isn't enough. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends."
The wake will be held Wednesday night from 7-9 P.M and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Also, the funeral will be held Friday morning at 11:00 A.M at Saint Rapheal's Catholic Church.

Who, What, When, Where, and Why?
"Virginia set to execute woman"
Theresa Lewis is scheduled to be executed today, September 23, 2010 at 9 P.M ET, at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jaratt for hiring people to kill her husband and stepson. I feel that this lead is effective, because when humans see or hear the word "death", they automatically want to get all the details. The European Unions's embassador to the U.S wrote that they "consider that the execution of people with mental disorders of all types is contrary to minimum standards of human rights." The most interesting information that was told first was, that Lewis would be the first woman to be executed in nearly a century. I feel that the story has a good ending for the people of virginia, because by executing Lewis, the Police, and other officials are doing their job to ensure that they keep their town safe.
"Police identify man swept to sea during Hurricane Igor"
The Police in Newfoundland have identified an 80 year-old man who was taken by a torrent of water during Hurrican Igor. Allan Duffet was swept away on Tuesday, and was lost in a "waterway near Britannia on Random Island, about 100 kilometres northwest of St. John's." I feel that the lead is effective, because of the words "swept to sea" and "Hurricane Igor". These words caught my attention, because this tragedy has caused a lot of damage to people who live in provinces near us. "Sergeant Boyd Merrill says it remains unclear how far Mr. Duffett was carried downstream because searchers have yet to find his body." The most important information was told first, which was, "Police in Newfoundland have identified the 80-year-old man swept away in a torrent of water during Hurricane Igor." The story does not have a good ending, because they Police have still yet to find the missing man's body.
"Is a virus making us fat?"
This week, Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, found that children exposed to a virus called adenovirus-36 or AD36, were more likely to be obese than other children who were not exposed. There are many adenoviruses, but AD36appears to be unique in being able to infect precursors of fat cells. "Lab tests have revealed the virus can hasten the development of these cells and increase their ability to store fat." Even though the most important information is not told first, I think the lead is effective, because obesity is a growing problem in our province, considering that New Brunswick has the largest obesity percentage in Canada. Dr. Schwimmer says that,"there are lots of reasons for people to put on weight. This virus is one more factor. So I think this could be a cause or a contributor – not that it is the cause." This story has a good ending, because it is making more and more people aware of what can cause obesity and that it is a huge problem these days.

Letter of Application For: Web and Layout Designer
September 21, 2010
Mr. Allan Carter
Blackville School
Blackville, NB
Re: APPLICATION FOR WEB AND LAYOUT DESIGNER
Dear Mr. Carter:
I am interested in applying for the job of web and layout designer for The Talon.
As a high school student, I have developed organization skills and creativity, for example, I have been part of our student council as a class representative for the past 2 years, which requires creativity in finding ideas for games, dances, and activities during lunch. I have learned to be very thorough and organized from being Graduation Class Executive, because when planning events, and handling money, you have to keep things together and on track.
I would be honored to be a part of The Talon staff! If you have any questions, contact me at a time that it best for you.
Sincerely,
Michelle J

Entry #1: The First Newspapers
There are many obvious differences bewtween our newspapers today, and the way they were years ago. For example, years ago, the newspapers did not have many pictures, today, mostly each article has a picture to go along with the write-up. If the old newspapers did have a picture though, it was black and white, today, our pictures are in color.
Many newspapers today are critical and still continue to publish, because years ago, government or expressing your opinion did not seem to be as popular, for example, women were not even allowed to vote until later on. Also, if people had a problem with someone or something, they did not just write it down; they turned to violence. Today, people have the right to express their feelings and thoughts, and if they have a problem, writing it down takes some of the anger away.
When I learned that the first Canadian newspaper was published in Halifax, I was not at all surprised, because Halifax played a big role in our country years ago. For example, when the Titanic sunk, the surviving people were sent to Halifax for care, and the not so fortunate people were buried right in the city of Halifax. Also, many people from over seas, and across the world migrated to Halifax long ago.
